  • 07/12/2014 אלרגיה בעיניים – כרוני

    Hi Doctor Solomon,

I hope you don’t mind me writing my question in english.

My 7 year old daughter has a recurring issue of eye porblems, as follows.

Her eye either starts to itch her or she feels like something is stuck in her eye, when nothing seems stuck and then a few days latter, she starts to get a whitish muccos – stringy like stuff in her eye. This issue stays with her until we give her steroids and then it goes away for around 2 months and comes back again. Light also bothers her eyes, especially sun light. The eye doctor thinks it is an external allergy causing it, and not an infection. We don’t want her to use steroids, yet we tried many other eye drops and nothing else seems to help. She is constantly rubbing her eyes, and this causes them to get scratched. Any advice on solving her problem? Would oral anti-histimen help?

    Thank you in advance

    Hi Yaacov,

Your daughter probably has vernal kerato-conjunctivitis (VKC), which is a chronic allergic eye disease in children. The treatment includes topical anti-histamines and topical steroids. Over the last few years we have gained experience using topical tracolimus (Protopic ointment) which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. Protopic ointment can significantly reduce the signs and symptoms of allergic eye disorders. However no medication can completely "solve the problem".

Please consult with a Cornea specialist in order to get a proper diagnosis and therapy for your daughter.

    Sincerely,

    Prof. Avi Solomon
